Breaking through barriers – a new website resource

For millions worldwide, the battle against depression is a lonely one. The illness itself can lead to isolation, and stigma, ignorance and misinformation only make it worse. As a result, even today the disorder often goes undiagnosed or untreated.

There is now a global Web site -- www.breakingthroughbarriers.com – developed in cooperation with the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH). The Web site provides accurate, up-to-date information about depression that is easily accessible not only to people with symptoms of depression, but also their family members and friends.

What’s more, this is a truly international site, available in nine languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Hebrew and Arabic. Additional languages will be added by the end of 2007.

The Web site is supported by Eli Lilly and Company and Boehringer Ingelheim, as well as various patient organizations and leading clinicians worldwide.

The Web site is a powerful new tool, but to make it truly successful, you can help by spreading the word. This provides a wonderful opportunity for helping people with depression to learn more about the disease, build a strong network of support and begin breaking through barriers to recovery. Because fighting depression is tough enough; you shouldn’t have to fight it alone.

LifeLine/Childline Western Cape was established in Cape Town in 1968 and has, since then, been providing ongoing telephone counselling, offering immediacy and an intimate means of communication to those needing to talk. The need for an organisation committed to the prevention of child abuse became increasingly apparent and in 1995 Childline became a division of LifeLine Western Cape. On average, the crisis lines receive around 4,500 calls per month.

With offices in Cape Town, Wynberg, Khayelitsha, Guguletu, Bishop Lavis, Mitchell’s Plain and now in Athlone, LifeLine/Childline Western Cape has grown considerably and now employs 113 members of staff. The majority of the organisation's staff members work in the area of HIV/AIDS counselling in the clinics and day hospitals around the greater Cape Town area.
