International Federation of Telephone Emergency Services
(IFOTES) Conference 2007

Child Helpline International participated at the International Federation of Telephone Emergency Services (IFOTES) Congress held in Prato, Italy from July 11 – 15, 2007. The title of the conference was “Emotional Health: A New Consciousness”. Child Helpline International was invited to attend the conference by the VESH network, of which IFOTES is a member.

The objective of this International Congress was to explore current understanding of emotions: how they function, their impact on our lives and our potential educational development. The approach was multi-faceted, and included sessions exploring the concept from a scientific, empirical, philosophical, artistic and research-oriented point of view.

IFOTES organised this conference with its Italian National member Telefono Amico Italia. The World Health Organization (WHO) also acted as co-sponsor of this Congress. Other organisations that supported the conference included: LifeLine International; Samaritans Befrienders Worldwide and the International Association of Suicide Prevention (IASP), which together comprise the Volunteer Emotional Support and Help (VESH) network. For the first time in its history, participation in this IFOTES International Congress was open to the outside world, which is why Child Helpline International was able to participate.

Child Helpline International thanks IFOTES and the VESH
network for extending the invitation.

LifeLine/Childline Western Cape was established in Cape Town in 1968 and has, since then, been providing ongoing telephone counselling, offering immediacy and an intimate means of communication to those needing to talk. The need for an organisation committed to the prevention of child abuse became increasingly apparent and in 1995 Childline became a division of LifeLine Western Cape. On average, the crisis lines receive around 4,500 calls per month.

With offices in Cape Town, Wynberg, Khayelitsha, Guguletu, Bishop Lavis, Mitchell’s Plain and now in Athlone, LifeLine/Childline Western Cape has grown considerably and now employs 113 members of staff. The majority of the organisation's staff members work in the area of HIV/AIDS counselling in the clinics and day hospitals around the greater Cape Town area.
